Seasonal variation in polyphenol content and antioxidant activity of the Brown Alga Cystoseira amentacea var. stricta (Sargassaceae) from Northwest coast of Algeria

In this study, we evaluated the seasonal variation in phenol and antioxidant activity of Cystoseira amentacea var. stricta. Algal material was harvested monthly and extracted by four solvents (methanol, acetone, hexane and diethyl ether), separately. Total phenol, flavonoid contents, as well total condensed tannins were determined in crude extracts. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using several in vitro assays: Total Antioxidant Capacity, Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power and diphenyl picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity. The results of TLC analysis obtained by Vanillin-sulfuric acid and those obtained by bio-autographic screening of active antioxidant compound show the presence of common molecules between the highly active extracts studied.
